Does this sound familiar?
My doctor informed me that a chronic medical condition necessitated major surgery.
As a busy mother, wife and professional woman I was faced with the dilemma of how to fit one more thing into my schedule. In addition, I was enrolled in a college course and the Christmas season was approaching. Of course I tolerated my symptoms and postponed surgery.
Surgery was finally scheduled following the completion of my class final and after I had finished my holiday shopping and decorating. I had a to do list, after all.
My plan was to take a four week leave from my job even though six weeks was recommended. I was sure I would heal quickly.
All of my in-laws were coming to my house for the holidays because it was my turn to host and I didn’t even consider alternatives. I thoroughly cleaned my house prior to my surgery. After all, that was on my to do list, too.
The last item on my to do list prior to surgery was to call my son’s school from the hospital before being wheeled in to the operating room. Of course, I needed to address his most recent misbehavior because I was the parent who always dealt with school issues.
The ball that finally dropped in this juggling act was when I missed my son’s holiday program at school four days post-surgery. I had just assumed that I would be physically able to attend. It was heart-breaking to face the fact that I wasn’t capable of doing so. After all, I had so carefully coreographed everything else!
Instead of focusing on all I had accomplished, I felt like a failure. I had completely bought into the Superwoman Myth!

Others who have lived the Superwoman Myth recognize that my personal story is actually within the realm of everyday experience among the multitude of career women. Even Michelle Obama recently admitted in a TV interview with Barbara Walters that she experienced some resentment regarding her own difficulties making her personal well-being a priority following the birth of her first child.
